Eurasia Review: Time For Action On Muslim Brotherhood’s European Activities – OpEd

Spread the Knowledge

By Nathalie Goulet and Ghanem Nuseibeh*

Fighting the Muslim Brotherhood should be at the top of the agenda of
the next Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) meeting in Makkah on May 30.
When the Brotherhood cannot come in through the door, they go through
the window — currently via the window of your computers and smartphones.

The European Council for Fatwa and Research recently launched what it
called a “Euro Fatwa App” out of Dublin. Its main audience was Britain
and it was heavily promoted by mosques in the UK that are affiliated to
the Muslim Brotherhood.

The head of the organization behind the app was a certain Yusuf
Al-Qaradawi, a Qatar-based Egyptian cleric considered to be the
spiritual head of the Muslim Brotherhood. Al-Qaradawi was banned from
entering the UK in 2008 and is also banned from entering France, the US,
the UAE and Ireland, amongst other countries, because of his extremist
views. What the app aimed to do was exploit technology and infiltrate
the homes of ordinary Muslims in Britain. He may have been banned from
physically entering the UK, but Al-Qaradawi’s app was to become a
vehicle for his extremist preaching. It was based in Dublin, possibly as
a test by his organization on British-European cooperation amidst the
Brexit negotiations.

The app included many extremist and anti-Semitic views. It aimed to not
only incite anti-Semitism, but also to isolate Muslim communities from
mainstream European life.

Lawmakers in both the UK and Europe, including French senator Nathalie
Goulet — co-author of this column — were made aware of the app. And,
after Google was alerted to its existence by the Sunday Times, the
company acted promptly and banned the app from its store. It was a
victory for common sense and an example of how Britain needs to work
closely with Europe in combating extremism.

The app was one example of the dangers that all of Europe faces, whether
the UK is inside or outside the EU. The most potent and dangerous
organization that operates across Europe with apparent immunity is the
Muslim Brotherhood. The app was an example of one of the tools it uses,
but it has many others at its disposal, including charities, madrasas
and businesses.

The British government’s 2015 review of the Muslim
Brotherhood concluded that “aspects of Muslim Brotherhood ideology and
tactics, in this country and overseas, are contrary to our values and
have been contrary to our national interests and our national security.”
In 2017, the Manchester Arena terrorist attack took place, with the
bomber, Salman Abedi, reportedly being at least partly radicalized at a
Muslim Brotherhood-run mosque.

Extremists adapt rapidly to changing circumstances and they are quick
adopters of technology. The time has come for a serious review of the
activities of the Muslim Brotherhood inside Europe. European countries,
including Britain, need to look internally at the threat. This should
not be connected to the activities of the extremist group outside of
Europe. Informal inter-European cooperation on the app was an example of
how effective collaboration can be.

It is time European governments took the issue of the Muslim Brotherhood
seriously. Europeans deserve to know what this group is doing on the
continent. Governments need to support the anti-extremism fight that
ordinary, moderate Muslims are involved with daily. I hope they act
before it is too late.

Even though he is banned from the country, is sought by Interpol and is
financed and hosted by Qatar, Al-Qaradawi is still trying to spread his
ideology in France. On Saturday, a tax-deductible charitable dinner in
aid of Mauritania’s Markaz Takwin Al-Ulama (Center for the Training of
Islamic Scholars) is due to take place in Saint-Denis, near Paris. It
has been preceded by a tour of 12 conferences and fundraisers. This
institute, which is close to the Muslim Brotherhood, was closed by the
Mauritanian authorities last year because it taught radical Islam.

At the Saint-Denis event, a video conference will be provided by the
group’s leader, Sheikh Mohammed Ould Dedew, who is known for preaching
radical, anti-Semitic thinking and for teaching men how to beat their
wives and children. Meanwhile, the floor will be taken by Dr. Mahfoud
Ould Ibrahim, who is also known for extremism. How can we explain that
this type of event, which is potentially dangerous for Europe’s
security, is being allowed? It will provide clear support for a
prohibited, Muslim Brotherhood-aligned group in Mauritania.

We are acting against our interests by allowing such an event.
Mauritania is a member of the G5 Sahel that France supports with its
troops.

A year on from the #NoMoneyForTerror conference in Paris, we can now see
that money still flies from the suburbs of the French capital to
Mauritania under the cover of Zakat. One can imagine the colossal amount
of money that can be raised in Europe during the holy month of Ramadan,
and that is why we need to follow the example of the UAE and Saudi
Arabia in terms of good practices when collecting Zakat. We need to
trace the money and prohibit cash from being used to support the Muslim
Brotherhood and its affiliated organizations.

We in France cannot send soldiers to secure West Africa from religious
extremism and terrorism and, at the same time, allow people connected to
the Brotherhood to fundraise within our borders. This attitude is
totally schizophrenic.

It is also why we need to launch a crusade against the Euro Fatwa App
and its like, both in Europe and in the many Muslims countries that are
fighting against terrorism.

The question of the app must be discussed at the upcoming GCC summit.

No more words, we need action.

Eurasia Review: Classified Iran Briefings Fail To Unite US Lawmakers On Threats, Response

By Michael Bowman

U.S. lawmakers expressed sharply diverging opinions on the threat
level posed by Iran after classified briefings President Donald Trump’s
national security team presented to all House and Senate members
Tuesday.

“They explained to us how the Iranian threat streams were different
than in the past … and that attacks against American interests and
personnel were imminent,” Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South
Carolina told reporters after meeting behind closed doors with Secretary
of State Mike Pompeo, acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan, and Joint
Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford.

“There was an escalation by Iran and its proxies,” said the top
Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul of
Texas. “We’re obviously concerned about our military soldiers who are
threatened by Iran, and a potential attack on them in Iraq,
specifically.”

Democrats had a different take on the briefings, as well as the
wisdom of the Trump administration’s pressure campaign against Iran’s
government and its proxies in the Middle East.

“I heard nothing that wasn’t a regurgitation of past administration
talking points on Iran. It was a long, lengthy history of their many
transgressions … so far, not a single shred of evidence to justify the
escalation of tensions in the region,” Virginia Democratic Rep. Jerry
Connolly said.

“This briefing was all about tactics, not about strategy. And that’s
been our worry from the beginning — that this is blind escalation,”
Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut said.

Deployments, patrols

Shanahan disputed such characterizations in comments to reporters at the Capitol.

“I walked them [lawmakers] through what the Department of Defense has
been doing since May 3, when we received credible intelligence about
threats to our interests in the Middle East and to American forces, and
how we acted on that credible intelligence,” the acting defense
secretary said. “We have deterred attacks based on our reposturing of
assets, deterred attacks against American forces.”

Earlier in the day, a Pentagon spokesman told VOA that U.S.
intelligence points to Iran as “highly likely responsible” for recent
attacks on four oil tankers in the Persian Gulf.

The Pentagon has deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier
strike group, the USS Arlington landing platform dock ship, a Patriot
missile battery and B-52 bombers to the region.

The U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet said it has increased maritime patrols
and exercises in the Arabian Sea that highlight the “lethality and
agility to respond to threat.”

Iran action

Iran, meanwhile, has announced a quadrupling of its uranium
enrichment capacity, threatened to move closer to weapons-grade
enrichment absent relief for its battered economy, and rejected, for
now, any prospect of dialogue with Washington.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif decried what he termed
“genocidal taunts” by the Trump administration, adding that “Iranians
have stood tall for a millennia, while aggressors [have] all gone,”
including Genghis Kahn and Alexander the Great.

“Try respect. It works,” Zarif tweeted.

Tehran’s responses to America’s pressure campaign should give the Trump administration pause, according to Murphy.

“The Iranians are nowhere near being ready to talk. They are not
showing any signs of backing down from their provocative behavior. So,
tell me how this [Trump administration] strategy is working if Iran
won’t talk and they’re not deescalating militarily,” the Democratic
senator said. “I don’t think they [administration officials] have any
good answers. Their plan is to just continue to push and push and push,
and hope that eventually the Iranians change their mind.”

Republicans argued that pressure on Iran is wise and warranted to protect Americans serving in the Middle East.

“We owe it to those in theater who are doing our bidding as a nation
to make sure that nobody can attack them without thinking twice about
it. And deterrence is best had by moving military assets forward to make
it real to Iran,” Graham said. “This is a very measured response. We’ve
been attacked for years by Iran. For 40 years, they have been killing
people, including Americans. Now, we are at a point in time when we’re
pushing back against the regime.”

Trump pulled out of the 2015 international nuclear agreement with Iran one year ago. He reimposed sanctions on Tehran and has threatened other penalties on countries that still do business with Iran. Washington’s actions have made the Iranian economy, already in tatters, even weaker.

VOA’s Carla Babb contributed to this report.

Eurasia Review: Iraq Aims To Ease US-Iran Tensions

Iraq will send delegations to Tehran and Washington over the
next few days in an attempt to ease tensions in the region, Iraqi Prime
Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said on Tuesday.

“Iraq has conducted high-level contacts (between the US and Iran), and
its vision is very close to the European vision to resolve the crisis in
the region,” Abdul Mahdi said.

“US and Iranian officials have assured us that they do not want to go to
war. So we will send delegations to Washington and Tehran.”

Tensions started to rise between the two countries after the US withdrew
from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, otherwise known as the
Iran nuclear deal, in May 2018.

Since then, the US has imposed economic sanctions on Iran. US President Donald Trump warned on Monday that Iran would be met with “great force” if it attacked American interests in the Middle East.

Iraq has been a battleground for the US and Iran since 2003. Both countries enjoy significant influence in the region.

Iraqi leaders believe that their country could become the first confrontation zone if war breaks out between the two nations.

“Iraq is in the stage of transferring messages between Washington and
Tehran as we try to defuse the crisis between the two sides,” Abdul
Mahdi said.

“It is our responsibility to defend Iraq and its people, and secure them from the threat of war.”

During a visit to Baghdad earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike
Pompeo told Abdul Mahdi that targeting any US interests in Iraq will be
dealt with militarily.

A Katyusha rocket was fired on Sunday into Baghdad’s Green Zone, which
houses government offices and embassies, including the US Embassy.

The rocket fire came days after the US evacuated staff from Iraq, citing
threats from Iran. It was not clear who was behind the attack, which
caused no casualties.

The attack “embarrassed” the Iraqi government, which has pledged to
secure diplomatic missions and protect US interests, senior Iraqi
officials told Arab News.

The Iraqi president, prime minister and speaker of Parliament, as well
as heads of political blocs and commanders of armed factions linked to
Iran, have held meetings over the past few days.

“We’re working together to invest our relations with the two parties
(the US and Iran) in order to ease the tension and find peaceful
solutions,” Ahmad Al-Assadi, head of an Iraqi parliamentary bloc, told
Arab News.

“The outbreak of war between America and Iran will cause great damage to
the entire region. Iraq will be the biggest loser because it’s in the
heart of the storm.”

During the meetings, political leaders and representatives of armed
factions linked to Iran agreed on a 12-point document that aims “to keep
Iraq away from the ongoing struggle between the US and Iran by all
possible means.” Al-Assadi said the Iraqi Parliament will vote on the
approved document.

Dozens of paramilitary troops associated with Iran operate in Iraq, and
present the biggest challenge for the Iraqi government and political
leaders.

“We agreed that no armed faction is allowed to ignite the war inside
Iraq for any reason, and whoever violates this deal will be considered
our enemy,” one of the leaders linked to Iran, who participated in the
meetings, told Arab News.

“We don’t want to be blamed for this war, but the situation may change if the US insists on starting this war inside Iraq.”

Eurasia Review: Iran Central Bank Chief Says Country Has Ample Forex Reserves

There are sufficient amounts of foreign currency in Iran, the Central Bank of Iran’s chief said, adding that the CBI has provided $6 billion in financing for imports only in the past two months.

In an interview with ICANA, Abdonnaser Hemmati said there are enough
foreign currency reserves in Iran and the central bank could have an
effect on the market whenever it deems necessary.

He said the CBI
has funded the import of commodities by providing around $6 billion
during the past two months alone, noting that $3 billion has been spent
for financing imports of medicine, medical equipment and basic
commodities, including rice, cooking oil, and inputs into livestock
production.

Hostile attempts to upset the economic situation in
Iran have failed, although the pressures still exist, Hemmati added,
stressing that the country’s economy is going to experience more
stability in the coming months.

Last month, the CBI governor said
the enemies have hatched secret plots to hit the country’s foreign
exchange market, calling for more efforts to foil the conspiracies.

In
January, Hemmati had explicated the CBI’s plans to neutralize the
economic pressures and psychological war waged by the US and its allies
with the aim of destabilizing Iran’s foreign exchange market.

The
market experienced a sharp rise in the value of foreign currencies and
gold coin prices in summer 2018. The Iranian money plunged to a record
low against the US dollar in August.

But the Iranian currency,
rial, began to bounce back against US dollar later in the year after
Hemmati unveiled a new package of regulations on foreign currency trade
which lifted a ban on the activity of money exchange markets.

On Sunday, pro-abortion activists vandalized Notre Dame de Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

On the three glass front doors of the church, the vandals spray-painted a pro-abortion message, “You do not have the right to decide what people can do, #ProChoice.”

The same inscription was painted on the side of the church.

This is the kind of hate speech we have come to expect in an environment where the abortion-happy Hollywood elite are promoting retaliation against pro-life Christians.

Swarthmore enjoys a liberal-left reputation, one that is a safe haven for pro-abortion activists. It’s a sure bet the vandals didn’t take a bus from Philly to desecrate the church.

Eurasia Review: Counter-Intuitive Climate Change Solution

Spread the Knowledge
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

A relatively simple process could help turn the tide of climate
change while also turning a healthy profit. That’s one of the hopeful
visions outlined in a new Stanford-led paper that highlights a seemingly
counterintuitive solution: converting one greenhouse gas into another.

The study, published in Nature Sustainability, describes a potential process for converting the extremely potent greenhouse gas methane into carbon dioxide, which is a much less potent driver of global warming. The idea of intentionally releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere may seem surprising, but the authors argue that swapping methane for carbon dioxide is a significant net benefit for the climate.

“If perfected, this technology could return the atmosphere to
pre-industrial concentrations of methane and other gases,” said lead
author Rob Jackson, the Michelle and Kevin Douglas Provostial Professor
in Earth System Science in Stanford’s School of Earth, Energy &
Environmental Sciences.

The basic idea is that some sources of methane emissions – from rice
cultivation or cattle, for example – may be very difficult or expensive
to eliminate. “An alternative is to offset these emissions via methane
removal, so there is no net effect on warming the atmosphere,” said
study coauthor Chris Field, the Perry L. McCarty Director of the
Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.

A problem and a possible solution

In 2018, methane – about 60 percent of which is generated by
humans – reached atmospheric concentrations two and a half times greater
than pre-industrial levels. Although the amount of carbon dioxide in
the atmosphere is much greater, methane is 84 times more potent in terms
of warming the climate system over the first 20 years after its
release.

Most scenarios for stabilizing average global temperatures at 2
degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels depend on strategies for
both reducing the overall amount of carbon dioxide entering the
atmosphere and removing what’s already in the atmosphere through
approaches such as tree planting or underground sequestration. However,
removing other greenhouse gases, particularly methane, could provide a
complementary approach, according to the study’s authors, who point to
the gas’s outsized influence on the climate.

Most scenarios for removing carbon dioxide typically assume hundreds
of billions of tons removed over decades and do not restore the
atmosphere to pre-industrial levels. In contrast, methane concentrations
could be restored to pre-industrial levels by removing about 3.2
billion tons of the gas from the atmosphere and converting it into an
amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to a few months of global industrial
emissions, according to the researchers. If successful, the approach
would eliminate approximately one-sixth of all causes of global warming
to date.

Methane is challenging to capture from air because its concentration
is so low. However, the authors point out that zeolite, a crystalline
material that consists primarily of aluminum, silicon and oxygen, could
act essentially as a sponge to soak up methane. “The porous molecular
structure, relatively large surface area and ability to host copper and
iron in zeolites make them promising catalysts for capturing methane and
other gases,” said Ed Solomon, the Monroe E. Spaght Professor of
Chemistry in the School of Humanities and Sciences.

The whole process might take the form of a giant contraption with
electric fans forcing air through tumbling chambers or reactors full of
powdered or pelletized zeolites and other catalysts. The trapped methane
could then be heated to form and release carbon dioxide, the authors
suggest.

A profitable future

The process of converting methane to carbon dioxide could be
profitable with a price on carbon emissions or an appropriate policy. If
market prices for carbon offsets rise to $500 or more per ton this
century, as predicted by most relevant assessment models, each ton of
methane removed from the atmosphere could be worth more than $12,000.

A zeolite array about the size of a football field could generate
millions of dollars a year in income while removing harmful methane from
the air. In principle, the researchers argue that the approach of
converting a more harmful greenhouse gas to one that’s less potent could
also apply to other greenhouse gases.

While reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to pre-industrial
levels may seem unlikely in the near future, the researchers argue that
it could be possible with strategies like these.
