We still don’t know precisely what Donald Trump is going to do when it comes to Iran. But whenever he publicly makes big ugly threats like this, 95% of the time it turns out he’s bluffing, and it’s all an attempt to distract us from some other awful thing he’s quietly doing behind the scenes. Whatever Trump’s strategy is with Iran, it’s quickly falling apart – and he’s going berserk in response.
Based on their respective track records, Donald Trump very probably doesn’t want to take the risk of starting a land war, while his National Security Adviser John Bolton would love nothing more. We know Vladimir Putin and the Saudi Arabia murder guy each get a vote too, since they both own Trump financially. This seems to be making it difficult for the Trump regime to keep a cohesive strategy intact, even if it is just one big bluff. The cracks are starting to show, and it’s causing Trump to crack.
This afternoon, Trump posted this tweet: “The Fake News Washington Post, and even more Fake News New York Times, are writing stories that there is infighting with respect to my strong policy in the Middle East. There is no infighting whatsoever. Different opinions are expressed and I make a decisive and final decision – it is a very simple process. All sides, views, and policies are covered. I’m sure that Iran will want to talk soon.”
That’s right, in Donald Trump’s mind, the nation’s two largest newspapers – which directly compete with each other – are somehow conspiring to make up the same fake story about infighting within his regime over Iran. Meanwhile, back in the real world, these two newspapers are exposing that Trump’s Iran scheme, which feels like thrown-together theater to begin with, is falling apart from within.
